The Ritz hotel made overnight accommodations available to the traveling aristocrat as well as the working guy. History tells us the most prominent visit was made by President Harry S. Truman during his and Alben Barkley’s presidential campaign. The Ritz also provided a large facility for the United States Army to give physicals to servicemen during WWII. Even the Red Cross set up shop in The Ritz for a time. On the lighter side, the grand ballroom hosted many dances and Christmas parties. But down to business now. The Ritz offered street-front opportunities for businesses such as G&O pharmacy, as well as a barber/beauty salon, grocery, and S&H Green Stamp store. To complete the package, there was a full dining hall and separate sitting-room for residents to gather socially. This atmosphere created a safe and fun place for the residences, the community, and travelers alike. According to Paducah native Paul Burger, son of William Burger, “it was the hopping place to be.”
Currently, under new ownership, the Ritz is being renovated and restored. Once again it has an inviting and relaxing atmosphere. The first and top floors’, with their charming embellishments, are looking grand as ever. Now the Ballroom is warm and wonderful and reflects the original style of the 20s. Carefully and lovingly the current owners are renovating the property, one room at a time. As they invest in this historic building, the invest in the future of Paducah.
Continuing the heritage of the Ritz – ‘PROVIDING A SERVICE TO PADUCAH.’
